WHO WE ARE

Wonfel (ወንፈል) is a popular Amhara cultural practice that represents community participation with the goal of accomplishing a challenging task. Wonfel  represents act of giving back to the community. 

The Ethiopian diaspora is equipped with knowledge, skills, work ethics and financial capability. Therefore, Wonfel would strive to mobilize and engage the Ethiopian diaspora to give back to its roots and support them in their fight against poverty.

Wonfel is a US based nonprofit organization with 501(C)(3) status registered in California in 2018. It is established to respond to the growing socio-economic needs of millions of Ethiopians; and its core focus areas are education and health. According to regional reports, educational coverage and quality is inadequate in many areas in Ethiopia. For example elementary school enrollment is very low and the drop-out rate is alarming. Among those enrolled in elementary school, only 20% complete secondary school and only 5% manage to continue to post-secondary level education. Wonfel believes improving the quality of education through various interventions.
